In this episode, Tirsa investigates and shows you what biobased construction looks like in practice: A visit to De Houten Kop in Rotterdam and a conversation with the architect about the benefits of timber construction. A look at the miscanthus group, where experiments with elephant grass are being conducted in collaboration with Wageningen University & Research. An explanation at The Green Village about straw insulation, including through the Straw Inblaascoalitie (Stroo Inblaascoalitie). A visit to NPSP, where they are collaborating with Delft University of Technology on biocomposite tiles
She visits NPSP to see how they develop new biocomposite materials and create nature-inclusive facades.
Because construction uses 40% of all materials and therefore faces a huge sustainability challenge. Both national and European climate goals are driving a drastic reduction in CO₂ emissions and the use of primary raw materials.
The facade accounts for 10 to 20 percent of a building's carbon footprint. The choice of materials has a significant impact on this. Therefore, there is a growing need for sustainable, circular, and cost-efficient alternatives that can be applied on a large scale in new construction and renovation projects.
NPSP develops, produces, and supplies innovative, environmentally friendly biocomposite facade panels made from biopolyester and natural waste streams under the name Nabasco. The facade panels are strong, dimensionally stable, and have a long lifespan. They comply with (fire) standards, are EPD/Eco-Friendly Materials (MKI) certified, and have proven themselves in practice.
