Biobased tree grille provides water buffering during heavy rain showers

Studio 1 op 1, in collaboration with NPSP, has developed a new tree pit concept that can buffer rainwater during heavy downpours and slowly release it to the surrounding tree. This project was commissioned by the Dommel Water Board in collaboration with the Design Academy Eindhoven research group. The pit is made from grass clippings from the Dommel Water Board. By disconnecting adjacent houses, rainwater will be directed towards the tree pits instead of the sewer system. Infiltration crates beneath the tree pit relieve the sewer system during peak rainfall, allowing rainwater to slowly seep into the ground, preventing drought. The project is a prime example of both climate adaptation and climate mitigation: an end-of-pipe solution combined with a structural solution. Climate adaptation is adapting our environment and society to the unavoidable consequences of climate change, such as extreme heat, drought, flooding, and rising sea levels. These are measures to reduce risks, such as greening cities, retaining and discharging water, and protecting against flooding. In the Netherlands, these measures are coordinated through programs such as the Delta Programme and the Climate Adaptation Knowledge Portal.

Climate mitigation (combating climate change) and biobased materials are closely linked: biobased materials like Nabasco® absorb CO₂ during growth, act as carbon sinks, and replace polluting materials like plastics, reducing total emissions from the construction sector – a crucial step towards sustainable construction and a circular economy. Studio 1 op 1 focuses on research and design in public spaces. Social and ecological issues are central to this, creating a renewed connection between people and their environment. NPSP develops and supplies innovative, environmentally friendly composite products for public spaces, construction, design, and mobility. We use biobased and circular raw materials as much as possible, which can be reused after a long lifespan. See www.studio1op1.nl  and www.npsp.nl
