A Food Waste-Based Biocomposite for 100% Biobased Facade Cladding

The construction sector generates significant CO₂ emissions and waste, while food industry by-products are often left unused. Therefore, research was conducted, in collaboration with the TU Delft, into the use of food waste as an ingredient for a circular façade material.

The façade material is made from ground nutshells and a bio-based binder. This gives a valuable second life to an organic waste stream and results in a façade material with a lower environmental impact. The design of the panel geometry was made by Etcetera, which included the first fully biobased corner panel. This innovative corner solution allows complex façade geometries to be created without relying on conventional materials for detailing.

At The Green Village, the biocomposite façade panels are implemented together with Sorba and tested under real-life conditions for their weather resistance, durability, and suitability as a demountable façade system.
